Michelle Goodman’s Business Plan Do’s and Don’ts

Michelle Goodman will be available via live chat to give advice on how you can be a successful entrepreneur. Live chat: 7.29.07 at 7pm EST, here on Writers Revealed.

Late last year, I wrote an article on how to craft a kickass business plan. What you can’t see in the online version of the article are the do’s and don’ts of business plan writing. So I’ve posted them here. But first let me say that the simpler your business model, the simpler your plan can be. It’s when you’re going for the big money (loans, investors) that you need a big beefy plan. A freelance writer, however, can get away with a one- or two-page plan; when you’re a company of one with little overhead, the main purpose of the plan is to get real with your finances (what you have and what you need), identify your target market and competition, and clearly define your goals (e.g., “I want to land three Fortune 500 clients by June 08,” “I want to ten clips in markets like the NY Times and WA Post,” etc).

OK, so without further adieu, my business plan do’s and don’ts…

8.21.07 Writers Revealed Launches: WR Classics

For the past three months, Writers Revealed has introduced you to today’s most buzzworthy writers. You heard Leslie Bennetts discuss choice feminism in The Feminist Mistake, you listed in on a roundtable of accomplished novelists discuss mothers in contemporary fiction, you met Joshua Ferris, author of the poignant novel, Then We Came to the End, you shared your online dating story pitfalls and successes, and you learned of a Chicago riddled with reformers, harlots and politicians. And while we will continue to chat with the finest authors of contemporary fiction and non fiction, we realized there is always room to celebrate the classics and world literature published before 1945.

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of Writers Revealed Classics - a monthly live chat where we’ll discuss our picks for great classic & world literature. And we invite you to join in on all the fun! Each month we’ll announce our classic selection. Leading up to the day-long chat on the Writers Revealed website, your host will offer her view of the book, including what she loved and didn’t love about the work and themes worthy of discussion. There is no obligation to join, there are no sign-ups, just pop in on the day of the chat to share your view of the book and connect with other readers.

7.22.07 Jamestown

Jamestown by Matthew Sharpe Jamestown is a fantasia on the Jamestown settlement of 1607, the first viable English settlement in North America, set not in the past but in an indeterminate future, some years after an unspecified cataclysmic event. The U.S. has devolved into warring corporate city-states. The settlers, rather than setting out for Virginia from England on three ships in search of gold and a route to the Pacific, set out from Manhattan on an armored bus in search of fuel, food, and uncontaminated water.

Writers Revealed: Matthew Sharpe About the Author: Matthew Sharpe’s novel Jamestown was published this year by Soft Skull Press. He is also the author of the novels The Sleeping Father and Nothing Is Terrible, as well as the short-story collection Stories from the Tube. He has taught at Columbia University, New College of Florida, the MFA program at Bard College, and the Bronx Academy of Letters, and now teaches in the English department of Wesleyan University in Connecticut.

WR Virtual Book Club 12.16.07 Antoine Wilson

I’m pleased to announce that our pick for December’s Virtual Book Club is Antoine Wilson’s haunting and elegantly written novel, The Interloper. For more details about joining the WR Virtual Book Club, click here!

As assured and sumptuously written as any first novel I’ve encountered–Antoine Wilson’s prose sings and the story he tells here is both clever and compelling. This is writing at its very best.
-T.C. Boyle
